Moto G 2015 VS Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Comparison Review

Screen and Design

We'll start off this comparison review by talking about the "elephant in the room"; the design. Yeah, we got it, the Galaxy Grand Prime is definitely prettier and more attractive than the Moto G 3d generation.

In numbers, the Galaxy Grand Prime has a sleek 0.34 inch thickness and is all round "cleaner" then the Moto G, sporting a more "modern look".  On the other hand, the Moto G 2015 pretty much repeats the design established in 2013 which also includes a 0.46 inch thickness factor.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's talk panel and resolution. Starting things off with the Galaxy Grand Prime, we find ourselves with a 5.0 inch IPS TFT screen that sports a not so modern  960*540 pixel resolution. All and all, that gives us about 220 pixels per inch, not bad  for 2010.

Moving on to the Moto G 2015 screen, we find ourselves with a 5.0 inch IPS LCD Display that sports a 1280 x 720 píxel resolution, which comes out at roughly 294 ppi. One thing to note here is the quality of the panel, and an LCD panel is always better at dealing with exteriors then a TFT panel. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

By the way, when it comes down to protection, the Moto G 3rd gen offers up a Gorilla Glass 3 coating, however, Samsung is mute about the Grand Prime sporting any kinds of protection so we're gonna go on a wild guess and say it doesn't have any.

Processor, RAM and Storage

We move on to the "wholly trinity" of specs in any comparison review. Specifically, we'll start of this segment of the Moto G 2015 VS Galaxy Grand Prime, talking about the CPU.

In this sense, we've got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 working at 1.4 GHz in the case of the Moto G and we've got a Snapdragon 400 at 1.2 GHz on the Galaxy Grand Prime

Both of these CPU's are quad core, so the question is; which is better? The answer; Motorola's model because it's the newer model which also clocks in at a faster speed which will allow you to multitask without lags.

When it comes to RAM we're split. The third generation of the Moto G comes in two models, one with 1 GB of RAM (the cheaper option) and one with 2 GB of RAM. On the flip side, the Galaxy Grand Prime just comes in with 1 GB of RAM. However, since we're comparing de Grand Prime with the Moto G 2015 base model, we'll call this one a tie.

Moving on to storage, we've got another tie since both models come in sporting 8 GB of internal expandable storage. Fun fact though; the Moto G accepts SD cards of up to 32 GB while Samsung accepts cards of up to 64 GB, so that's a win for Samsung.

Oh my, this is going to be brutal. We'll start off by saying that the Moto G 2015 has the same photographic sensor as the Nexus 6, which gives it quite an advantage. The Galaxy's sensor, however, has no sorts of recognition to back it up. But let's get down with the facts:

The Moto G 2015 has a 13 megapixel f/2.0 rear end camera with a dual tone flash, autofocus and that's pretty much it. As for the front facing camera, we've got a 5 megapixel sensor capable of performing HDR so as to get the best lighting for every possible sexy selfie group pic.

On the other hand, when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, we've got an 8 megapixel sensor on the read end camera with autofocus and a regular LED flash and we've got another bet on vanity  5 megapixels front facing camera.

In both cases the rear end camera can record at a full 1080p at 30 fps, with the Galaxy Grand also offering this feature for the front facing camera, something pretty nifty if you ask us.

Battery Life and Connectivity

Finally, we're closing in on our comparison review of the Moto G 2015 VS Galaxy Grand Prime and it's time to talk about battery life. Now, we don't have official numbers from Samsung, however, Motorola, with it's 2470 mAh battery has promised us 24 hours of battery life at mixed usage.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Grand Prime has a 2600 mAh battery that at least promises roughly 11 hours of conversation over a 4G/LTE network.

In terms of connectivity, the differences are minor since both smartphones are pretty "well endowed" in this sense. As such, they both support 4G/LTE networks, the both have Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi b/g/n, GPS and of course microUSB 2.0.

Software Features and extras

It's about time to wrap up this comparison review. However, we can't do so without mentioning the OS running on these smartphones. In this regard, the Moto G 2015 already ships with the latest and greatest Android 5.1 version, while the Galaxy Grand Prime ships with Android 4.4.

It's also worth mentioning that the Moto G has barely any customization done to the Android experience, therefore the software is more fluent and the updates more guaranteed. However, Samsung, with it's TouchWiz interface, changes things up quite a bit and ultimately can end up slowing down the smartphone thanks to the included bloatware. Though we must say that Samsung has cut down on the bloatware quite a bit, it's still there none the less.

As an extra feature worth mentioning on the Moto G's third generation, we've got an IPX7 certified phone on our hands which pretty much means it can go under water up to 5 feet for a maximum of 30 minutes. Sure, it's not something we recommend you do, but it's a function that's there.

Veredict / Conclusion

Finally we've arrived at the end of this in depth comparison between the Moto G 3rd Gen and the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime. As for which smartphones is better?; we can honestly say that the Moto G 2015 is better then the Galaxy Grand Prime.

Sure, the prime offers up a more attractive design at first glance, but when it comes down to CPU power, camera features, battery life and a couple of other things, the Moto G 3rd generation ends up offering a better bang for your buck, or a better price/spec relationship if you will.

Got any comments? Think we missed out on anything? Fire away!

  1. I think you mixed up the two processors, the Grand Prime actually has the 410 one. Also, even though the Moto G has better camera specs, tests have proven that its photos were kind of terrible; it's not just a matter of numbers y'know.
And with those things changed, it's much less easy to choose the best one right?
