Toshiba Satellite C55-B5277 In depth Review
Display and Design
We'll start this review by saying that though this laptop is quite modest in specs and pricing it's also quite attractive in design. As a matter of fact, it sports the same refined body as the Toshiba Satellite C55-C5241, a more complex laptop that goes for $449 thanks to it's Core i5 CPU and it's 8 GB of RAM.
As you might expect, you won't find a Full HD screen here. However, you will have access to a 15.6 inch widescreen with a standard 1366 by 768 pixel resolution TFT display. This is, as stated, the standard for 90% of the laptops in the market.
Aside from the attractive design, we also get a pretty lightweight laptop that doesn't surpass the 5 pounds (4.8 pounds) nor does it go over the 1.5 inches of thickness.
The keyboard is also quite comfortable and easy to use, thanks to its chiclet style keys which allow for a smooth typing experience. Of course Toshiba didn't forget to include a numeric keypad on the side so that when you start crunching numbers you can do so without breaking a sweat.
Modest CPU, 2 GB of RAM and discrete Graphics
Moving on towards the more technical segment of our review, it's time to take a look on the inside of the Toshiba Satellite C55-B5277 and find out what makes it tick.
Starting off with the CPU, the new Toshiba laptop comes with an Intel Celeron N2830 processor that clocks in at 2.16 GHz and moves up to 2.41 GHz thanks to the burst technology. It's a 2014 processor, however that's one of the reasons this laptop is as cheap as it is. That said, it's not a bad CPU for modest computing. It has 2 cores, 1 MB of cache and it's built on a 64 bit architecture which will allow it to take full advantage of it's RAM.
Speaking of RAM, the Toshiba Satellite C55-B5277 has only 2 GB of DDR3L RAM. This might as well be it's biggest drawback. However, you must know that it's also possible to upgrade the RAM up to 16 GB. Personally we don't really recommend going beyond 8 GB since you won't notice much of a difference with this set of specs but you do have the option to go all the way if you wish to do so.
What happens if you don't upgrade the RAM? If you don't upgrade the RAM you're looking at a more basic computing experience. If you upgrade it then the laptop will run a bit faster. However, if you're looking to use it to browse the web, watch movies and Skype with your friends and family then you're set with 2 GB of RAM.
As far as graphics go, this laptop has a discrete Intel HD graphics card which basically means this is not a laptop for gaming, video editing, image editing or really anything very demanding on the graphics department. Sure, you can touch up some pics and edit a few videos now and then but it won't run as fast as it would if it had a more powerful graphics card so rendering times are higher in this case.
Storage and Battery Life
When it comes to storage we generally find three options in the market: 500 GB, 1 TB or a variable SSD drive. In this case Toshiba has gone with a standard 500 GB SATA hard drive that runs at a speed of 5400 rpm. This is, as you might expect; the low end of the spectrum. However, it's good enough to store videos and pictures of your family trips so if that's what you're going for it will do fine.
In terms of battery life, we've got a lithium battery which according to early reviews gives us between 3 and 4 hours of battery life. Once again we're on the low end of the spectrum but we're also on the low end of the price range.
Ports and Other Stuff
One of the key selling points for the Toshiba Satellite C55-B5277 other than its $230 price point is that it comes with Windows 10 right off the box. This gives this laptop a slight advantage over other competitors in this space but only a slight advantage since you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free with any Windows 8 laptop you purchase within the first year of use so unless you consider yourself a lazy person who doesn't like to go through any "hassle" then this advantage can be easily ignored.
As far as connections go, we've got our standard WiFi connection (b/g/n), Bluetooth, HDMI, VGA, ethernet port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0 port to tie you over. The Toshiba laptop also includes a webcam as well as an SD card reader, however it does not have a DVD reader therefore if that's a dealbreaker for you then you should look at other options.
Verdict: Is the Toshiba Satellite C55-B5277 worth buying?
Wrapping up our review of the Toshiba Satellite C55-B5277 we've come to see that we are in front of a pretty basic laptop. If you're looking to do basic computing tasks like browsing the internet and editing office documents then this laptop will get the job done.
However, if you need something a bit more complex then we would definitely recommend you go for another model like the ASUS F555LA-AB31 that comes with a Core i3 CPU and a Full HD screen or even the Toshiba Satellite C55-B5240X that comes with 4 GB of RAM and an updated CPU.
Unless you're a truly basic user then you'll notice the difference in the long run and be glad you spent a few extra bucks on a better laptop. On the other hand, if you know you're going to use the laptop to do pretty basic stuff then you should go ahead and buy it.
