Asus ROG GL552VW-DH71 In Depth Review

Screen and Design

We're gonna start off our review by talking about one of the most vital elements of the Asus ROG GL552VW-DH71; its screen. Specifically, the newly launched notebook sports a 15 inch Full HD screen with a Matte IPS display that offers good visibility regardless of the lighting conditions.

This means that if you wanted a gaming laptop to take out to the park without fear of losing visibility the Asus ROG GL552VW-DH71 is the way to go. All in all, we're pretty enamored with the screen quality, being one of our favourite screens to play games as well as watch movies.

As far as design goes, the new notebook doesn't go unnoticed thanks to its premium build and unique design which are sure to catch more than one set of eyes. It's pretty lightweight, weighing in at 5.6 pounds and it's not particularly thick measuring just 1.3 inches.

It's backlit keyboard is something to be reckoned with thanks to especially designed WASD keys that will help you accommodate your hands in a comfortable fashion once you're ready to start gaming.

High end CPU, Loads of RAM and a strong graphics card

Moving forward with our review it's time to talk about the key specs that determine the speed and horsepower in this laptop. Starting off with the processor, the Asus ROG GL552VW-DH71 implements an Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU.

This is a sixth generation quad core processor, "straight out of the oven" that comes with a 64 bit architecture, clocks in at 2.6 GHz and reaches a speed of up to 3.5 GHz thanks to its turbo feature. The CPU has a cache of 6 MB which is nothing to be laughed at and it also runs 8 threads acting as an octa core processor when it counts.

As far as RAM goes, the new gaming laptop comes with 16 GB of DDR4 SDRAM. That's a LOT OF RAM. Which basically translates into a machine that's more than capable of handling extreme multitasking.

Also, it should be noted that we're talking about DDR4 RAM and not your typical DDR3 RAM module, so that's definitely a step in the right direction as far as technology goes though the difference in a real case scenario is not as noticeable as you might've expected.

In terms of graphics card, the Asus gaming notebook comes with an Nvidia GTX960M GPU with 2 GB of GDDR5 VRAM. Personally, we would've opted for a 4GB model  but taking into account the price point set by Asus we can understand why it chose to take a modest hit over here while still delivering a stellar performance thanks to its desktop rate CPU and its healthy stock of RAM.

Storage and Battery Life of the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71

The praises that this laptop garners on its key specs it loses when it comes to storage and battery life. That said, the new Asus gaming laptop sports a 1 TB hard drive running at 7200 rpm. Sure, its great if your looking to store all your favourite games and all but as far as speed is concerned we would've liked to see an SSD unit instead.

However, if you're speed junkie like us then it should be noted that this laptop is easily upgradable and you can easily add a 256 GB SSD drive without it taking too much of a technical know-how to do so.

In regards to the battery life, Asus doesn't say how much battery life we've got but it does state that this notebook features a 4 cell 3600 mAh battery which would typically translate into roughly 3-4 hours of battery life.

Ports and Other Stuff you should know

As far as connectivity is concerned we're pretty much covered. The Asus ROG GL552VW-DH71 even goes as far as to include a USB type C port for the more advanced users. However, for the rest of us, we'll be glad to hear that we've got 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, an ethernet port and of course an SD Card reader.

The integrated WiFi antenna is also top notch thanks to the WiFi ac standard and we've also got built in Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

Another attractive feature within our review of the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71 is that this laptop also houses Windows 10 as its operating system straight out off the box. This means you won't have to update it as soon as you log onto the internet and you'll be ready to play as soon as you get this laptop.

Final thoughts and Opinions

We've finally finished our review and after combing through the set of specs in this laptop we can say that it's a pretty good deal. Available on Amazon for what we believe to be a killer price (check price here) this laptop features a set of specs that make it an excellent gaming laptop.

Of course, we would've loved an SSD storage unit straight out of the box and a bit more battery life but other than that this notebook presents itself as a force to be reckoned with within the gaming community and we would definitely recommend it to a gamer on a budget.
